A Healthy Toothbrush For Eugene Kids

As a parent of active Eugene children, I’m sure you’re always on the lookout for places where germs lurk, and you probably know that toothbrushes have the potential to grow a lot of bacteria. However, there are some simple rules you can follow in your Seattle, WA area home to keep your child’s toothbrush (and your kid’s mouth) as healthy as possible.

One of the best ways to limit bacterial growth on a toothbrush is to allow it to dry completely between uses. This is best done by storing the toothbrush in a toothbrush holder on the counter, not tucked away in a drawer where air flow is limited.

A toothbrush holder is superior to a cup because it’s important that neighboring toothbrushes don’t touch and share germs.

Air drying toothbrushes is easy when you purchase two for each child at your nearest Portland drugstore. Teach your kids to alternate between the two so they each have more time to dry out all the way.

Toothbrushes should be replaced every three to four months, mainly because normal wear and tear will make them less effective at cleaning teeth. But, regardless of the age of the toothbrush, replace it after your child has a cold or other illness.

Creative Lunch Ideas For Your Eugene Kids

If your kids are tired of eating the same lunch every day, then today’s Portland kid’s health blog is for you!

Instead of the old standby PB and J, put a couple of tablespoons of peanut butter in a plastic container. Then give your child healthy things to dip into it, like whole wheat crackers, celery, or apple slices.

Bento boxes are a fun way to to pack a creative and eye-catching lunch. Originating in Japan, bento boxes have small compartments to separate elements of a meal and can be found at many Seattle, WA and Alaska area stores. They’re great for child-sized portions of food, and for kids who hate the idea of one food touching another food.

Finger foods are a fun lunch for children, and it’s easy to keep them nutritious.

Low-fat cheese cubes, fruit slices, and veggie sticks can add up to a filling meal for kids with all the vitamins and minerals they need. Sandwiches are a lunch time staple for kids, but you can try mixing up the starch. Instead of bread, try a whole-grain wrap or a whole-wheat pita.

Bozeman, MT Kid’s Health: Guard Against Chapped Skin

When it comes to your Bozeman, MT child’s health, you might first think of their diet. While putting vitamins and minerals inside your child’s body is important, you also need to pay attention to what is going on on the outside. I’m talking about your child’s skin.

The skin is our body’s largest organ and when skin’s smoothness is disrupted, small cracks and openings can create an entryway for bacteria and germs.

Active Bozeman, MT kids don’t often think of the condition of their skin until it starts hurting. Playing outside in hot, cold, or dry weather can lead to small cracks around knuckles or nails. This painful condition is called dermatitis, or extreme dryness. Fun Peanut Butter Snacks For Portland Kids

Healthy, growing children need to snack between meals for proper nutrition. Most Eugene parents have probably had the experience of forgetting an afternoon snack. What happens? Kids finally notice they’re hungry about an hour before dinner, and boy is it hard to wait!

A great snack ingredient is peanut butter. It is an inexpensive source of protein and calories and gives Eugene children the nutrients they need to grow and to stay healthy.

Here are some great healthy snack ideas using peanut butter for Alaska and Seattle, WA kids.

Peanut Butter Banana Pops

Bananas, cut in half width-wise
Popsicle sticks
Peanut butter
Chopped nuts, sprinkles, or other topping

Take the popsicle sticks and push them carefully into the cut bananas. Spread peanut butter over the bananas and roll in nuts or other topping. Freeze. Enjoy.

Peanut Butter Balls

This is the kind of recipe you can’t really mess up, and the portions are approximate.

about 1 cup of peanut butter
a few tablespoons of honey (2-3)
a few tablespoons of instant dry milk

Mix everything together until it forms a large ball. Pinch off small pieces of dough, and roll into ball shapes. Store in the refrigerator, and pull them out at snack time.

Green Veggies Boost Immunity For Eugene Kids

Do your children catch every cold that goes around Eugene? Do they regularly have earaches, coughs, or runny noses? Including more green vegetables in their diets could boost kids’ immune systems and help them stay healthy, according to a study in the journal Cell.¹

The study found that green vegetables help produce a chemical that is important for a strong immune system. The chemical provides signals to the immune cells in the gut and skin, helping them to function properly.

If your Eugene kids are like mine, convincing them to eat more green vegetables is as hard as getting them to clean their rooms. However, Portland parents can find sneaky ways to add more green vegetables to their children’s diets.

My kids love pasta and sauce so I puree spinach into the pasta sauce, disguising the leafy green immune booster. Adding kale to protein smoothies is another way to sneak green vegetables into their tummies.
